Featured Class: Genesis taught by Lu Wing

This semester our students have been blessed by Lu Wing in their Genesis class.  It is excited to watch as his students grow in their desire to study God’s Word.

  • What do you enjoy the most about teaching this class?

The interactions with the students – particularly their questions and comments.

  • What is the main theme/application you want your students to get from your class?

Experience growth in their personal holiness and ability to hear God’s voice for themselves.

  • How has preparing to teach this class affected your spiritual life/ grown you spiritually?

My faith is always challenged with the character studies detailed in Genesis.  From Noah, Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph, specifically, I find comfort in each their fallibilities, and their courage to recognize their errors and progress in their walk with God.  Genesis provides one of the greatest platforms for God’s demonstration of His love and grace for individuals – which is why this book is essential for discipleship and personal holiness.

  • Can you give us a short bio about yourself? ( family, ministry, education, and work).

Being raised in Riverside, CA, I was one of the 100 that attended the original Calvary Chapel – Lonnie Frisbee at All Saints Episcopal Church in 1971 – where I met Jesus.  Having a fascination with science, I graduated from San Francisco State University in 1980, in the same class taught by Dean Kenyon – founder of the Discovery Institute and Intelligent Design movement.  My wife and I and our four children attended Horizon Christian Fellowship in San Diego– and we moved to Aberdeen Scotland where I received my Ph.D. in biochemistry.  After returning to San Diego, I was ordained as a pastor in 1998.  I have worked in the biotechnology industry for over 20 years and I am currently a toxicology consultant.  With continued interest in the field of genetics and theology, I am currently working on my Masters in Theology at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland (distance learning), while teaching at CCBC and consulting.

Abigail Vaughan is a student in the Genesis class.  Here are her thoughts on the class:

What did you enjoy the most about this class?

What I enjoy most about this class is the way that it deepens my understanding and knowledge of God. While in class learning about the different characteristics of the Lord and the way He works in and through us gives me a greater love for Him. Every time I leave this class God continues to reveal more parts of his nature to me throughout the week until our class meets again.

What has stood out to you the most, and how can you use this to benefit you in the future?

The way that Lu Wing explains scientific evidence through the creation lens is so interesting. He shows us how science actually proves that creation is true, that it could have only been through Him that all things came to life. This can help me in the future with having a greater knowledge of creation and how to explain what I believe to others with opposing views.

How can you practically apply what you have learned to your life?

Many people from other beliefs have issues with what is written in the book of Genesis. Having a greater understanding of the book will better prepare me for conversing with others who have those different beliefs and inquire about the book of Genesis.

If you were recommending this class to a friend, what would you tell them?

Lu Wing has an amazing gift for teaching. He leads you to understand how to take passages apart to discover deeper and more meaningful symbols that will strengthen your relationship with the Lord. I would one hundred percent recommend taking his classes.

  • What did you enjoy the most about this class?

I would describe this class as interesting and quite informing. I love listening to Lu wing expound on different theological claims from Genesis scholars and tie science in truth.

  • What has stood out to you the most, and how can you use this to benefit you in the future

That God established His beautiful plan of redemption through a variety of covenants and they are all fulfilled through Jesus Christ. ( Genesis 3:15 ) In addition, I’ve learned about God’s nature, Origin of Sin etc.

  • How can you practically apply what you have learned to your life?

Genesis helps me practically apply a deeper intimacy towards worship. The Lord remains faithful and just throughout the book of Genesis.

  • If you were recommending this class to a friend, what would you tell them?

If you believe that the Bible is the word of God take it.  In all seriousness, Genesis sets the foundation for the Gospel. Paul describes this so well in  1 Corinthians 15:21-22 (ESV) — For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. Be encouraged my friend and take the class!”
