Do You Have to Be Calvary Chapel to Attend CCBC?

It’s a fair question.

Short answer: no. You do not need to be part of a Calvary Chapel church to attend Calvary Chapel Bible College.

Many of our students come from other church backgrounds—Baptist, non-denominational, charismatic, and more.

So what does it actually mean that we’re a Calvary Chapel Bible college?

Rooted in Calvary Chapel, Open to the Wider Church

Calvary Chapel Bible College was born out of the Calvary Chapel movement and remains deeply shaped by its theology, values, and philosophy of ministry. We embrace that identity openly and gratefully.

At the same time, from its earliest days, CCBC has served students from a wide range of church backgrounds. That has never been an exception to the rule. It has been part of the school’s life from the beginning.

Why? Because Calvary Chapel itself emerged within the broader evangelical church, holding convictions that are widely shared by Christians across denominations and traditions.

Broadly Evangelical and Christ-Centered

Calvary Chapel Bible College is broadly evangelical in its theology. We affirm historic Christian orthodoxy, the authority of Scripture, salvation by grace through faith, and the centrality of Jesus Christ in all things.

Because of that, we have much in common with a broad swath of churches and Christians. Students from Baptist, non-denominational, charismatic, evangelical free, and other church backgrounds often find that the core theological commitments of CCBC resonate deeply with their own.

Our curriculum reflects that focus. We major in the Scriptures. The Bible is our primary textbook. That shared commitment to God’s Word creates common ground across many traditions.

Is CCBC Denominational or Non-Denominational?

It may be tempting to categorize Bible colleges as either denominational or non-denominational. CCBC does not fit neatly into either category.

We are not a denominational school in the formal sense. Calvary Chapel is not a denomination, and CCBC is not governed by a denominational hierarchy.

At the same time, we are not a generic non-denominational school that floats free of any particular ecclesial identity. We do not attempt to be all things to all people, nor do we hide the convictions that have shaped us.

Instead, CCBC exists within a movement. We are shaped by a specific theological stream and philosophy of ministry, even as we remain engaged with the wider evangelical church.

Embracing Our Calvary Chapel Identity

We do not set aside our Calvary Chapel identity in order to welcome students from other backgrounds.

  • We are committed to the expositional teaching of the whole Bible.
  • We emphasize the work and leading of the Holy Spirit.
  • We value simplicity in worship, ministry, and church life.
  • We believe in servant leadership and the centrality of the local church.

These commitments form the environment students step into when they attend CCBC. For some students, this feels familiar. For others, it may feel new. In both cases, it provides a clear and coherent framework for theological and spiritual formation.

Students are not required to become “Calvary Chapel” in name or affiliation. They are invited to engage seriously with the Scriptures within a community shaped by these convictions.

Who Studies at Calvary Chapel Bible College

We are happy to serve students who come from outside Calvary Chapel and who are drawn to the kind of biblical foundation CCBC provides.

CCBC students come for different reasons:

  • to gain depth in Scripture
  • to grow in theological clarity
  • to seek direction for ministry or vocation
  • to be formed in a Christ-centered community
After their time at CCBC, students may return to their home churches, enter ministry, or continue discerning their calling. Our aim is not to reproduce one model everywhere, but to equip students to serve faithfully wherever God leads them.

Calvary Chapel Bible College exists first for the church, not for itself. That includes the Calvary Chapel family in a primary way, but it also includes the broader body of Christ we gladly serve alongside.

What This Means for You

Calvary Chapel Bible College is open to students from many church backgrounds, while remaining rooted in our Calvary Chapel identity.

Students are not asked to set aside where they come from. Instead, they are invited into a community shaped by Scripture, dependence on the Holy Spirit, and a distinct philosophy of ministry.

That clarity is intentional. It allows students to engage deeply with the Word of God while being formed within a community that knows who it is and why it exists.

Students should know who we are and what we value. When that clarity is present, hospitality becomes honest rather than confusing.

Calvary Chapel Bible College is rooted, not closed. Confident, not narrow. And grateful for the opportunity to serve all who are seeking to be formed by the Word of God for a lifetime of faithful service.
