Happy New Year from CCBC!

New years bring new possibilities, opportunities, and new mercies. As the new year comes, CCBC continues to educate students to be established in Christ, confident in scripture, and empowered to witness. Thank you for your continual support of Calvary Chapel Bible College and all of its endeavors.

Serving the Student Body Through Prayer

-Devon Hayes, Kitchen Manager

The CCBC Kitchen exists to build one another up, to serve the student body, and to glorify God. This has been the driving force to create a habit of prayer in the kitchen. As a team we prioritize praying at the start of every shift, intentionally setting this time aside to encourage one another, bear each other’s burdens, and set the tone for our workday.

Martin Luther said, “I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” Our Kitchen Team has taken this saying to heart by dedicating the first fruits of each shift to seeking the Lord on behalf of the students, faculty, staff, food, and each other. In our time of prayer, we try to pray through each point of our vision statement that we have collaborated as a team to create.

In addition to our time in prayer, this upcoming year, we will set time aside to study the Word of God. As a team, we will go through a book about the theology of work seen through the book of Genesis. This study will consist of 15-minute Bible studies each shift which include Bible reading, discussion questions, and reflection amongst the team.

Our privilege is to serve CCBC students by providing meals to nourish them for the day, cultivate fellowship around the tables, and always thank God for His constant provision.

New Year’s Resolution:

Knowing God Through His Word

-David Diaz, Dean of Men

As we celebrate the New Year, many of us use this time to reflect on the past year and make resolutions for the year ahead. These resolutions often focus on health, personal achievements, starting new projects, or finishing those we left undone, as well as improving things like grades or habits. However, as Christians, we are reminded that the best resolution we can have is to know God more deeply; in John 17:3, Jesus says, “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (NASB95) The life that Jesus offers us is a life of perpetually knowing Him as this is where true fulfillment is found.

The young Jonathan Edwards understood this well. At 19 years old in 1722, he wrote a list of resolutions reflecting his commitment to knowing God more. His list may be longer than many of ours, but as we read it, we can see how his focus was on eternity with Christ and not on temporal things—a worthy example for us to follow.

Today, apart from encouraging you to read Jonathan Edward’s resolutions (https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/the-resolutions-of-jonathan-edwards), I want to exhort you to resolve for yourself to read the Holy Scriptures more diligently this year. (see resolution #28). I would advocate for reading as much of the Word as you can at the beginning of the year because we often lose motivation as the year goes on. That is why I recommend a 90-day reading plan. Although it may be challenging and even seem impossible, believe me when I tell you it is not only easier than you think, but there is much blessing to be found in doing so.

Many of us prefer to go slower because we want to dive deeper into the verses. However, if you read the Bible in the first 90 days of the year, you will have 275 days from the rest of the year to go deeper into any book you want, having a better understanding of the big picture as you dive into the details.

Here are some plans you can use:

Jonathan Edwards begins his resolutions with the following statement, “Being sensible that I am unable to do anything without God’s help, I do humbly entreat him by his grace to enable me to keep these Resolutions, so far as they are agreeable to his will, for Christ’s sake.”

He understood that any resolution we make requires the fullness of God’s grace to see it through. Without His grace, even our best intentions would fall short, but with His help, all things are possible. Therefore, I encourage you to begin your resolutions this year with that same statement. Resolve to set your eyes on Christ as you know Him more through the reading and meditation of His Holy Word.

Happy New Year, and may the Lord richly bless you!
